New build underway!

Excited to be starting the build for this glulam timber framed project this week! Our lovely build team making amazing progress already, can’t wait to see this design all coming together, it’s always such an exciting time after months of designing.

Working from home - home offices and garden studios

Since so many of us are working from home right now, we’ve been reflecting on the various home offices, studies, libraries and studios we’ve crafted over the years - and selected a few of our favourites.

Let’s start with a purpose built, panelled study, as part of a substantial extension to this Arts and Crafts property, with a rather special patterned mosaic floor tile, and bespoke oak joinery. Space to reflect. And space to rest a book!

This lovely peaceful room was part of a large extension and renovation project - please see more of this project here

And next, a classic North Oxford study space, light filled with floating bookshelves, an eclectic mix of old and new, and opening out via newly created French doors onto to a bespoke balcony.

Or, how about this gorgeous Cotswolds barn conversion, which neatly tucked in a beautiful first floor office on a mezzanine level - accessed via a stunning sculptural stone staircase. Soundproofing protects this work space from the open and airy vaulted barn space. A band-sawn oak sliding barn door conceals the office space completely from view when not in use. Overflow thinking space is available on the immediately adjacent mezzanine.

Next, here is a colourful library, and a colourful home with a huge home office with a splendid glazed lantern, and a couple of other nooks for reading or studying.

We loved working on this grand but fun house - follow this link to see the rest of this project in Oxford’s iconic Boar’s Hill.

On a different tack, a simple contemporary reflective space for new-build Dropshort Farm

Lets not forget the classic garage and home office- this one incorporates a double garage, ground floor workshop, and via its own porch area, an oak staircase leads through a vaulted light-well to a secure home office on the first floor

This next project included a handy study space within a whole wall bookcase / display wall. Concealed storage under houses a plethora of children’s toys and games. More of this North Oxford villa here

And finally, to work in progress, a bespoke artist studio and detached garden study with artist in resident accommodation.

We are also working on some designs for a very special garden studio - will share as soon as we can!

Stay safe,

Automated arts and craft style garage doors.

Our client wanted automated garage doors to this detached garage deveopment. We wanted to have a traditional aesthetic to compliment the Art and Crafts house, and to use traditional timber joinery. the bespoke home office conversion above meant that ceiling height in the garage was restricted, so up and over doors wouldn’t work, so we designed a heavy duty swing door mechanism alongside a specialist automation contractor. The design was quite complex as we considered many different ways of the doors functioning to give the best technical solution, alongside design appeal. In the end KDRD worked on designing a specialised framework to accommodate the particular operating mechanics. The mechanics and fitting procedure were carried out prior to; in the model, (produced for the project), to establish feasibility. All aspects of safe operation were considered with finger guards, door detectors and brushes utilised as required with PIR lighting to assist during winter months.
